Public Listening Private Downloading?
I find it pretty frustrating at the moment that I either have to make a track public and not downloadable or private and downloadable.
Often I want to be able to have a track listenable for everyone, but not downloadable, and then share it with a bunch of friends who are DJ's who may download it.
This means that every time I want to send a track to someone to download I have to make it private, downloadable and then set the access on it, and the the public cant see it!
Am I missing something perhaps in the way the system works? It just seems clumsy to me if I had to upload 2 copies of the same track..To my way of thinking you should be able to share a track for listening or downloading purposes publicly and do the same privately ...that would make more sense than having an either or situation...
as I said, I might be missing something here, and if I am and you could point it out to me I'd be very grateful.
This situation is kind of hamstringing the way I would envisage using soundcloud...i.e. letting loads of people listen to a tune but only a bunch of people I know and trust get access to new stuff if I so choose:)
I see from a post 4 months ago in feedback from Nils that this is to be implemented soon. Has this been implemented yet?
Thanks:)

Inappropriate?I would also like to see private downloading on public tracks. Good suggestion!

Inappropriate?Yes, thanks guys for the suggestion. If I remember right, we had two or three similar requests for that in the past weeks. While this is a great idea that makes super-sense, I'm afraid this will not be too easy too pull off technically. I briefly talked to one of our devs back then and he mentioned that this giving one and the same file different rights + actions is kinda tricky. But we will definitely pick this issue up after the fall release.
-
Inappropriate?Ok I'm sure this is a lot harder in practice than what's suggested below and I haven't even seen how you guys have organised everything....but surely this isn't too hard to pull off (I guess it might be for reasons I haven't considered).
Would something like the following not work? At the risk of severe stupidity not even having considered the problem for longer than 5 minutes or seen the way the system is designed. If you had:
A File
File
Id
Name
Description
Size Etc.
Share Publicly (Boolean)
Downloadable Publicly? (Boolean)
Now The Public Share Boolean overrides anything in the file share table below and likewise for the downloadable flag....I.E. if you have your file set to public downloadable your share list for that file disappears cos everyone can download it. However if you had a file set public not downloadable then your share list would appear again with the option to set flags for people in that list to downloadable. If the File is not set public and share list is there with those downloadable flags...now only people in your private share list on a file can see the file and some of them may download it...
File_Share (For A files private share list)
Id
User_Id
File_Id (key of the file we are sharing on)
Downloadable (Boolean)
And if its an email that is sent to the do the whole account creation thing like you are doing and add the user to the files share list on signup...that way each private share could have permissions set for them...ie. a track could be private and downloadable for one guy, private and listenable for another and if its public
and downloadable then i guess its listenable and downloadable by your whole private list by definition... -
Thanks for taking the time to send this feedback, Jon. Will discuss this with the team.
Thanks again! -
Inappropriate?Hey Jon & George,
apologies for the delay on this, just discussed this with the team. We will get on it after the fall release and try to find the best way to make this possible on a technical level but also on a UI, usability and messaging level.
Thanks again for your suggestions.

Inappropriate? Thanks so much David, yeah that feature will really improve what you can do with Soundcloud, cant wait...thanks so much for keeping me updated about this:)
-
Inappropriate?Sure, happy to have this conversation. This is great feedback you guys are giving us.
Sorry about not being able to be more specific about this + timings. Let's get past the fall release together and pick up the details after we get the update "behind us" :)
Thanks Jon! -
Inappropriate? This is exactly what I need as well, I am actually going to use other filesharing services to allow downloading among label DJs, and S/Cloud for wider public "listen only" distribution, which sucks, but will avoid confusion from having two version of the same track on my profile. One stop shop would be great (without having to have it twice on s/cloud)
