Need to Block/Delete Spam-Followers
i swear to god i'm deleting my account and not recommending this site unless you people commit to a feature that allows users to block / delete spam-followers. by now you must fully realize, these people are trying to promote themselves. and i DON'T CARE ABOUT THEIR MUSIC.
i understand you want people to be able to non-intrusively follow other users, so if you are dead set on such a feature, i recommend that you allow it with NO NOTIFICATION to the user being followed, and that will drop the incentive for spammer-self-promoters for actually doing so.
wake up feature people!

Hi guys, as a first step in preventing people from "spamming" the community by following too many people, and sharing tracks privately to them, we've capped the number of people you can follow at 2000. This change affected a handful of people, and I believe it will greatly improve the quality of the SC community as a whole in the future. As always, this could be subject to change, and we are working on other features around this as well, such as blocking, but this change I think will take care of most of the problem. Don't hesitate to un-follow people who you think are spamming you. That will protect you from any 'spammy' tracks littering your dashboard...

Inappropriate?so basically, i've had very little response to this issue, except someone who said i have no right to complain. what happened to the right to free speech? what happened to people who say they are committed to feedback?
i'm having a much better experience with the getsatisfaction people.
this is the message i'm sending to the myriads of random spam-followers who keep adding me, despite the fact that i have not posted any tracks to listen to.
"please stop following me. your spam-following attempt at getting me to listen to your music is not going to work. it's clearly not kind or considerate, but selfish, self-indulgent and impersonal. go away."
I’m really hoping for someone serious to respond and at least discuss the issue.

Inappropriate?hey,
sorry for your bad experience with "spammers" on soundcloud. we've been discussing these issues internally lately and have already taken the first steps in doing something against it. we have a redesign coming up where you'll very easily be able to see how many people somebody is following vs how many who are following them (a good way to find out if somebody is a spammer or not).
we're also sending out emails to the handful of italian guys (it's really not that many) who're trying to add everybody who's signing up. we've also made it harder to get a good overview of everybody who's new on the site (to make it harder for the spammers).
we also changed the way private tracks notifications work recently, so that if you get a private track from somebody who is following you (but you're not following them) then that track ends up in your DropBox, and you'll get no notification about it on email. You have, by the way, pretty good options to remove email notifications completely on contact adds by going to http://soundcloud.com/settings/email#...
the way i do it is that I have a weekly digest with all stuff that is not private messages or private tracks from people i follow.
the point you have about removing (or at least having an option to remove) contact add notifications from the dashboard+email notifications is a good one. we'll consider this. also the auto-reply email stuff is good, but we'll need more time for this.
I’m sad

seems like having the option of seeing who is new to the site might actually be a nice feature, rather than a bug ;] -
Inappropriate?* Giovanni Ikome (Giovanni Ikome) from Italy who has 6 public tracks & has made 52 comments
* djspidernyc (DJ SPIDER nyc) from New York City, United States who has 6 public tracks & has made 60 comments
Was pretty much the first thing that happened after I joined.
Giovanni has 305 *pages* of followers, and djspidernyc 375. You should absolutely get something done about follower spam, or the feature will be useless.
Preferably not something involving me having to block them, as that would still make spam "profitable".
I’m concerned

Inappropriate?@xenos, yep, we're working on this one. the good thing is that if you don't add those guys back, then you won't really be bothered by them anyways.

Inappropriate?I asked this before the Help forum was moved here but didn't get an answer. If these "spammers" stop following us and then follow us again, do we get the notification again in the dashboard?
-
unfortunately you do. we're working on making this better. -
Inappropriate? As well as the spam following there's also the dropbox spam that is becoming more common. I'm getting tracks which have been shared to almost 2000 users. Surely there's some sort of limits that could be placed on both following and sharing tracks.
You could limit people to only following 10x* the number of followers they have. This way people who have a large (and growing) number of followers can expand their network within reasonable limits, but the "spammers" have a hard limit which means they have to grow their network organically - if people don't like them then they can't keep following more users. Ultimately this will dissuade the "spammers" and hopefully improve the service for the rest of us.
* This is an arbitrary number. :-) -
Inappropriate? Is there anyway to block a user who is spamming you with 'private' shared tracks?

hey, check this thread for a coming solution: http://getsatisfaction.com/soundcloud... -

Inappropriate?Hi Eric, this does reduce the impact of the spamming to a certain extent - limiting users to only following a maximum of 2000 people reduces the scope for people following me. However, I don't think this solves the underlying problem that people are following strangers and not listening to their tracks simply for the purpose of appearing in the dashboard.
2000 is still a lot of people to be able to follow and to be honest, considering the limited management facilities on the dashboards, will result in an unmanageable account. I don't see the point in allowing this to go on. I follow about 30 people, and I find my dashboard hard to manage. There can be no reason to follow 2000 people and still contribute meaningfully to the community.
I've suggested in a previous post in this thread that you could limit the number of people a user follows to a factor of the number of people following them. So for example, if I had 30 people following me, I could follow 300 people. This allows me to expand my contacts, but prevents the potential spammers from spamming large numbers of people too quickly. If their music (and tactics) are any good then they'll soon get more followers which will allow them to spread their music further.
Don't get me wrong, I appreciate what you've done to address the problem, ad I'm glad you guys are taking it seriously. It's just I see this "spam" issue as a potential stumbling block for the community and I'm trying to help where possible.
Keep up the good work.
Cheers,
maurice

Inappropriate?I'd like to agree with eric here and also explain: i myself have started following loads of people. Great tons of people, intense amounts. Now honestly the whole point of this site is to explore music and find people that you may have similar tastes/interests/ideas with. If you do not want to follow someone as they have very different vibes, then don't add them back. Plain and simple. I number of people I've lovingly discovered by casting wide nets has been profound, and although i haven't been able to personally connect with every single person, this is a social networking site, and contacts can take time to build so i don't concern myself over it. I hope that everyone comes to see that the purpose of this site is to connect producers and labels and listeners sure, but also to connect people. That being said i've also started reducing numbers of follows to hone down on more focused circles in which i think i'll find like minded people. Just like any group there will be people who want to abuse the system, but loads more who are just trying to spread some vibes... :)
I’m feeling rather good.
