Conversion/Bitrate of uploaded files
Hey Soundcloud,
Happy early betatester, i'd like to know how conversion of files works when uploaded. If it's wav file, in the player it happens to be mpg (mp3) converted to 128 kbps. What codec are you using, is it very good ?
More important, when uploading an already encoded mp3 files, is the file re-encoded on the fly by Soundcloud ? If I upload a 192 kbps mp3 file, will it be decoded and then re-encoded at 128 kbps ? If so, is it better to upload directly a 128 kbps mp3 file ? Are 128 kbps files untouched (not re-encoded if they are already at 128 kbps) ?
Thank you for these precisions...
Best regards,
JC Lemay

Inappropriate? When receiving a track we're always re-encoding it to assure user play-back. Uploading a 128kbps file directly wouldn't change that matter. Therefore uploading PCM files is always the best decision. If your files are download-enabled the downloaded file would still be the originally uploaded one to make sure the uploaded audio quality stays the same.
I’m confident

Inappropriate? Is there any chance of offering a variation on this. For example, we currently have a Soundcloud player on our Myspace page. We've been told by a load of local promoters/DJ types that they prefer bands from whom they can download the tracks from their MySpace profiles. So we enabled downloads. However, one of our tracks I had uploaded as a WAV file to get the best quality MP3 encoding done at your end.
It would be great if we could tick a box that allows us to upload a WAV, but only allow download of the MP3 you guys encoded.
Cheers, and apologies to the OP for hijacking his question
