Calibrated Monitor Levels and K-System
Dear SoundCloud
Would be really helpful to have calibrated levels on the volume slider I just noticed :-) so we can properly comment on level..
I calibrate to the Bob Katz K-System (as we all should) and think it would be a great step in the loudness wars. Already a great step forward in allowing .wav/CD quality here, any possibility of 24bit files??
Thanks for a great site

Inappropriate?Hi Hugo,
could you clarify the levels idea a bit? Do you mean, that the volume slider should display numbers like '-2db' on it?
also, we do support 24 bit uploads. I upload most of my own material in 24/96 wav files. -
Inappropriate?Hi Matas
Yes, if 0 equals full volume (no attenuation or addition) and the level meter is in -1 dB steps (This is where the calibration would be important so the -1 is exactly 1 dB).
Would help greatly in being to judge loudness and amount of compression used in order to make helpful comments..
Great about the 24 bit uploads, had a feeling I leapt before I looked on that one :-)
As for giving the K-System a plug I think it will help us all and Bob Katz would most probably be willing to help and like the idea. www.digido.com . SoundCloud is also in a great position to make a difference with the worlds loudness issues...
Had little listen to your SoundCloud page, nice chilled vibe, thanks. Definitely translates to mp3 well I'm sure that 24/96 helps.. If full volume is true digital 0 then I'd guess your about a K-12 on 'A Day in the Park' and probably a K-14 on 'Communion in coincidence'.
Have just re calibrated after a lengthy acoustic treatment upgrade (as a result my SoundCloud levels are all over the place...) so judgment could be a little off but I'm sure you get the idea with the advantage of calibration and K-System..
Most released music I listen to sounds too loud (when using the K-System some is like K-4 which means almost no crest factor - difference between peak and RMS). Gets fatiguing very quickly and with PA amplified music gets ear damaging at lower levels as our ears have no time to recover, not to mention the degradation in quality and listening experience..
Thanks

Inappropriate?I've discussed this topic with my colleagues. Our advice would be to keep the volume slider on the max setting (0db) so you can calibrate it on the next stage - computer sound mixer or your amplifier.
In a future, we'll maybe show more information about the audio file, with max peak levels, RMS etc. but I can't give you any ETA on that yet.
Greetings,
Matas
